Future sanctuary
Thanks to the legacy left to Omogolo Wildlife Trust by Ms Marie Rose Thissen, the Sea Turtle project in the Niger Delta (Nigeria) can now lease land from the community, to better protect the Turtles, their nests and their eggs. The land that is set aside for the sanctuary (marked yellow on the map) is a popular place for the Turtles to nest and will soon no longer be accessible to people and dogs.

Turtle Rescue in France Horrible scenes after the raging wildfire in the Massif du Gros Bessillon, a nature area in the Var in France. Many slow-moving animals could not escape the fire... Tortoises can survive when they are able to dig themselves in the ground but will usually end up with (partly) burned shells. The Hermann’s Tortoise (an endangered Mediterranean Tortoise species occurring in the Gros Bessillon) is known for its resilience. Village des Tortues in Carnoules gives the necessary medical treatment and care to those that fell victim to the wildfires. Omogolo Wildlife Trust donated 2000 Euro from its Emergency Rescue fund to help. -
Seals at Ecomare Omogolo Wildlife Trust helps Ecomare on the island Texel in the Wadden Sea in the Netherlands to raise money for the care of sick, wounded and/or orphaned Seals. -
Farewell to a Gentle Giant Africa has lost one of its most iconic big tuskers, ‘One Ton’, to natural causes. -
Students raise money for the Sea Turtles STORM is the name of study association for Sustainability Sciences at Utrecht University. Their annual fundraising campaign this year is for Omogolo Wildlife Trust’s Sea Turtle project in the Niger Delta. -
A Rhino girl is born at Ziwa A new Rhino calf was born today at Ziwa Rhino & Wildlife Ranch in Uganda. A girl. Too cute! -
Thank You, Ms. Nan Uijtdewillegen A Leaf on the ‘Tree of Thanks’ and thank-you letters from two students from Chawama Legacy academy (grade 5) who attended GRI’s “Discovery Day”. The Discovery Day program at the Wildlife Discovery Centre gives students a day-long hands-on learning experience that brings conservation to life for them. The €11,500 donation from OWT’s inheritance of Ms. Nan Uijtdewillegen allowed 600 students to participate! -
First Rhinos leave Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Today, the first four Rhinos are leaving the breeding sanctuary to be released in Ajai Wildlife Reserve, one of the areas where the Rhino occurred before their extinction in Uganda. An important milestone: after phase 1 and 2 of Uganda’s Rhino Reintroduction program (Awareness raising and Breeding) they are now entering phase 3: Release in natural habitat!

New arrivals at Ziwa Exciting things happening at Ziwa Rhino & Wildlife Ranch in Uganda! Hartebeests and Giraffes have been brought in from Murchison Falls National Park by Uganda Wildlife Authority, to complement the natural habitat. Zebras should be arriving soon… -
A cry for help for the Hippos in Ngamiland A cry for help for the Hippos in Ngamiland, Botswana. The rivers are bone-dry and there is no grazing for them… Several people are helping out with water and hay, and all efforts are now coordinated, distributing donations to the locations where food & water is needed. -

A new outdoor enclosure at Lwiro The new outdoor enclosure for the young Chimpanzees at Lwiro is ready and the Chimps are exploring on their first day in. Construction of the enclosure was made possible with the legacy of Ms Nan Uijtdewillegen, who passed in June last year. -
Grateful We are deeply grateful to have been included in the will of Ms. Nan Uijtdewillegen, who passed away last June. Together with her friends and relatives, we selected five projects that would have been close to Nan’s heart. The Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Center in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of them. Technical Director Itsaso explains just how important this donation is to them. -
A vaccination and sterilization clinic in Chanoga A big THANK YOU to the team of Maun Animal Welfare Society (MAWS) for a dog vaccination and sterilization clinic that was held in Chanoga, Botswana on 29 March. The team worked hard, from 8 AM till 6 PM, to sterilize 10 dogs (8 females, 2 males). 13 dogs were vaccinated.

Seven Hippos relocated to Moremi Photos of a successful operation to relocate seven Hippos from the mud of Lake Ngami to Moremi Game Reserve. Three other Hippos managed to walk to a pool close to Lake Ngami and three Hippos unfortunately died before they could be relocated. A big thank you to the Botswana Department of Wildlife & National Parks, to SAVE Wildlife, and to the donors of Omogolo Wildlife Trust! -
Hippos stuck in the mud at Lake Ngami This is the situation at Lake Ngami in Botswana. This year’s floods didn’t reach the lake and the result is a mere puddle, surrounded by mud. Hippos and other animals try to reach the little water that is left and get stuck in this deathtrap. A rescue operation is on its way: 10 Wildlife Officers and 4 community volunteers will help move the Hippos from the mud, direct them to a channel where they will be able to access water and food and later relocate them to the Boteti river. -
Orphans go to Okavango Delta Because the Botswana government decided not to give the needed support to EWB’s Elephant sanctuary, its doors will be closed and the orphans moved to the Okavango delta for the next phase of their rehabilitation. They had already grown old enough to be weaned from milk and are now weaned from human care. -
